Submission made to NSW Department of Planning and Environment objecting to the Hume Coal approval on the grounds of its impact on the environment through its global warming impact.
100% renewable energy is the only safe way to go, to save our climate. Nuclear energy is far too expensive and creates it’s own problems for the environment. Waste is an ongoing source of danger, requiring permanent protection for ever. Accidents do happen and are extremely dangerous. Most states that have nuclear power go on to develop nuclear weapons, adding to their proliferation and increasing the danger of nuclear conflict. Uranium mining on its own lays waste to large areas of land with radio activity.
The waste, by-products and used fuel from civilian power plants are compact and have never harmed anyone.
Nuclear weapon states have overwhelmingly developed their arsenals prior to building any nuclear power plants, if at all. The vast majority of nuclear energy-using nations never built weapons.

Nuclear energy, just like any large-scale process or project, can be expensive or affordable http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0301421516300106 and most importantly is low emissions http://www.nrel.gov/analysis/sustain_lca_results.html

The impacts of modern uranium mining are no worse than any other mining, and usually much lower http://www.minerals.org.au/file_upload/files/publications/Environmental_impacts_of_uranium_mining_in_Australia_May_2017_WEB.pdf
